Home / Legacy Dynamics / Axapta
Axapta is the historical name of the ERP product that evolved into Microsoft Dynamics AX.
The product lineage includes:

AX 2009 and AX 2012 have reached the end of Microsoft's extended support lifecycle. AX 2009 SP1, AX 2012 and AX 2012 R2 reached the end of extended support in April 2022, while AX 2012 R3 reached the end of extended support in January 2023.

Evaluate existing X++ customizations and determine what should be migrated, redesigned, replaced or retired.

Move required business data into the target finance and operations environment using the appropriate Microsoft-supported approach.

Replace legacy integration patterns with an architecture appropriate for the target Dynamics 365 environment.

Modernize toward Dynamics 365 cloud applications and connect with capabilities such as Power BI, Power Platform, Microsoft 365 and Copilot where appropriate.
Microsoft provides the Dynamics AX 2009 Data Migration Tool (DMT) for migrating data from AX 2009 to finance and operations apps.
Microsoft states that DMT is the only supported upgrade path from AX 2009. The tool helps bridge differences between the AX 2009 and finance and operations data schemas.
Important: AX 2009 should not be described as a standard in-place upgrade to the latest Dynamics 365 application.
However, Microsoft explicitly states that AX 2012 upgrades are complex and should not be expected to run end-to-end without data cleanup, tuning, customization work and issue remediation.
AX 2012 RTM should be treated separately.
Microsoft currently states that an upgrade to the cloud version of finance and operations apps is supported from AX 2012 R2 and AX 2012 R3. AX 2012 RTM is not currently supported for that cloud upgrade path.
For AX 2009 environments, Microsoft provides the Data Migration Tool (DMT) to migrate data to finance and operations apps.
The DMT is designed to help move AX 2009 data into the target environment while addressing differences between the source and target data schemas. Microsoft Learn
AX 2009 modernization is not simply an application upgrade.
The project needs to separately address:
Determine what AX 2009 data needs to be moved and prepare it for the target environment.
Determine how existing AX 2009 functionality maps to current finance and operations capabilities.
Assess legacy custom development and identify functionality that needs to be redesigned or rebuilt.
Review external systems and redesign integrations for the target architecture.
Test migrated data and business processes before production cutover.
Microsoft provides an Upgrade Analyzer to help determine upgrade effort and identify potential issues.
For AX 2012 modernization, Microsoft’s tooling can help migrate code and metadata, but the process still requires developer effort and remediation. Microsoft’s Code Upgrade service can assist with migrating AX 2012 R3 code and metadata to the finance and operations architecture.
Keep functionality that remains necessary and appropriate.
Use standard Dynamics 365 functionality where it already satisfies the requirement.
Rework functionality where the underlying business process has changed.
Migrate required custom code into the appropriate current development architecture.
Remove functionality that is no longer required.
AX modernization does not mean every customer moves to one single Dynamics 365 application.
The target architecture depends on the business processes being supported.
For applicable retail and commerce scenarios.
For organizations with project-based operational and financial requirements.
The target architecture may also integrate with:

The important distinction is that these applications form part of the Dynamics 365 ecosystem, rather than being interchangeable replacements for AX.
Use Microsoft's Data Migration Tool as the supported migration mechanism.
The supported upgrade process includes a data upgrade that can bring forward the database and, where supported, full transactional history.
Before migration, assess:
Identify the exact starting point.
Understand the scale and complexity of custom development.
Determine which AX capabilities are actually being used.
Assess transactional, master and historical data.
Identify functionality that may prevent or complicate an upgrade.
Map all external dependencies.
Determine compatibility and replacement requirements.
Identify opportunities to adopt standard Dynamics 365 functionality.
Determine the appropriate combination of Dynamics 365 applications.
Use the appropriate Microsoft-supported migration approach for AX 2009 data.
Support analysis, code migration, data upgrade, testing and validation for eligible AX 2012 R2/R3 environments.
Determine your current version, technical constraints, customization effort and target architecture.
Assess and migrate applicable custom code for the target finance and operations architecture.
Prepare, migrate and validate business data.
Map legacy AX processes to current Dynamics 365 capabilities.
Redesign integrations for the target Dynamics 365 ecosystem.
Plan mock cutover, functional testing, data validation and go-live activities.
Support adoption, process optimization, reporting and ongoing improvements.
Move away from AX 2009 and AX 2012 environments that are beyond Microsoft's extended support lifecycle.
Move toward current Dynamics 365 finance and operations applications.
Use an appropriate migration strategy to retain required transactional and historical information.
Reduce unnecessary custom code and adopt standard capabilities where appropriate.
Connect ERP with modern Microsoft and third-party applications.
Build toward a modern cloud-based Microsoft business application environment.
Create a foundation for relevant Microsoft Copilot and AI capabilities.
Axapta is the historical product name that evolved into Microsoft Dynamics AX. Both terms can therefore refer to different stages of the same ERP product lineage.
AX 2009 does not follow the same upgrade path as AX 2012. Microsoft provides the AX 2009 Data Migration Tool (DMT) as the supported upgrade path for migrating AX 2009 data to finance and operations apps.
For AX 2012 R2 and AX 2012 R3, Microsoft currently provides a supported upgrade path to finance and operations apps. The process includes code and data upgrade activities and requires analysis, remediation and validation.
No. Microsoft’s current documentation states that the cloud upgrade path is supported from AX 2012 R2 and AX 2012 R3. AX 2012 RTM is not currently supported for that cloud upgrade path.
The supported AX 2012 upgrade process includes a data upgrade and can bring forward full transactional history, subject to the supported scenario and technical requirements. It should not be presented as an automatic database copy; data cleanup, configuration, customization and remediation are part of the process.
Applicable AX 2012 custom application code can be migrated using Microsoft’s code migration tooling, but customizations require analysis and remediation. Microsoft explicitly describes the upgrade tooling as a framework rather than a fully automatic conversion.
No. This is an important distinction. Microsoft documents a Data Migration Tool for AX 2009, whereas AX 2012 R2/R3 has the more comprehensive code-and-data upgrade framework.
There isn’t one universal replacement. Depending on the business requirements, the target may include Dynamics 365 Finance, Supply Chain Management, Commerce, Project Operations, or a combination of applications.
No. Microsoft identifies prerequisites and unsupported scenarios. For example, certain deprecated features—including virtual companies or data partitions can prevent the supported upgrade path. Microsoft recommends using the Upgrade Analyzer where eligibility is uncertain.
