Modernize Legacy Dynamics CRM with Dynamics 365

Your Microsoft Dynamics CRM environment may contain years of customer data, sales processes, service workflows and business-critical customizations.
Sarakadiya helps organizations assess and modernize legacy Dynamics CRM and Dynamics 365 Customer Engagement on-premises environments, with migration strategies aligned to the appropriate Dynamics 365 online and Microsoft Dataverse architecture. Modernize your customer platform while protecting the data, processes and customer relationships that matter to your business.

From Microsoft Dynamics CRM to Dynamics 365

Microsoft Dynamics CRM evolved through multiple releases before becoming part of the Dynamics 365 family. Organizations may still refer to their environments as:

The historical product line includes:

For online customers, modern Dynamics 365 customer engagement applications such as Dynamics 365 Sales and Dynamics 365 Customer Service run on Microsoft Dataverse and use the Power Apps model-driven app architecture.

Why Modernize Your Dynamics CRM Environment?

Your CRM is more than a database. It contains customer relationships, sales processes, service history and business knowledge.

Modernization provides an opportunity to improve the underlying customer application architecture while retaining the information and processes that remain valuable.

The Right CRM Migration Path Depends on Your Version

Not every Dynamics CRM environment follows the same migration route.

Dynamics CRM 2011 / 2013 / 2015

These older CRM releases should not be presented as having a direct supported migration to Dynamics 365 online. The appropriate approach depends on the current environment, upgradeability, customizations, data and target architecture. A technical assessment may determine whether the environment should first be upgraded to a supported on-premises version, reimplemented, or handled through another modernization approach.

Dynamics CRM 2016

Dynamics CRM 2016 reached the end of extended support in January 2026. Organizations still operating it should evaluate their modernization roadmap. Migration options depend on the exact environment and supported upgrade path.

Dynamics CRM / Dynamics 365 Customer Engagement 9.x On-Premises

This is an important distinction.

Microsoft’s current on-premises-to-online migration guidance supports Dynamics CRM / Dynamics 365 on-premises version 9.0 or later, subject to eligibility and technical prerequisites. Microsoft’s migration process can move the on-premises database to Dynamics 365 online and Microsoft Dataverse through Microsoft’s migration tooling and process.

Modernize Legacy CRM Customizations. Don't Just Migrate Them.

Legacy Microsoft Dynamics CRM environments often contain years of custom development, complex business logic, and integrations that support critical business operations. Moving these customizations without evaluating their relevance can carry forward technical debt and limit the benefits of modern Dynamics 365. We help you assess, rationalize, and modernize legacy CRM customizations to create a more scalable, maintainable, and future-ready CRM environment.

Dynamics CRM Migration & Modernization FAQs

What is the difference between Dynamics CRM and Dynamics 365?

Microsoft Dynamics CRM is the historical product family that evolved into Dynamics 365. Modern customer engagement applications include products such as Dynamics 365 Sales, Dynamics 365 Customer Service and Dynamics 365 Field Service, which use Microsoft Dataverse and Power Apps model-driven app architecture.

It depends on the version.

Microsoft's current on-premises-to-online migration program supports Dynamics CRM / Dynamics 365 on-premises version 9.0 or later, subject to eligibility and technical requirements.

Older CRM versions require a separate assessment and may need an intermediate upgrade, reimplementation or another modernization approach.

Do not assume a direct migration path based solely on the product name. Dynamics CRM 2016 has reached end of extended support, and Microsoft's current on-premises-to-online migration program specifies version 9.0 or later as the source requirement.

The appropriate route should therefore be established through a technical assessment.

It should not be marketed as a direct supported cloud migration. Older CRM environments need to be assessed for upgradeability, data migration and target architecture before selecting a modernization path.

The answer depends on the source environment and intended migration method. Older versions are outside the current version 9.0+ on-premises-to-online migration requirement, so a direct migration should not be promised without an assessment.

Microsoft documents upgrade paths between supported Dynamics 365 Customer Engagement on-premises releases. However, the exact starting version and update level determine which upgrade is supported.

Customizations must be assessed before migration. Microsoft specifically notes that unsupported customizations or SQL Server-level changes may need to be fixed or mitigated before an on-premises-to-online migration.

Data migration depends on the source version, migration route, target architecture and data requirements. Customer, sales, service and custom data should be assessed individually rather than assuming every historical record will automatically transfer.

For supported Dynamics CRM / Dynamics 365 on-premises environments, Microsoft's migration guidance covers migration to Dynamics 365 online and Microsoft Dataverse.

There isn't one single replacement. Depending on the business requirement, modernization may involve:

Dynamics 365 Sales | Dynamics 365 Customer Service | Dynamics 365 Field Service | Dataverse | Power Apps

Microsoft's current lifecycle information lists Dynamics 365 for Customer Engagement Apps version 9.x on-premises with mainstream support through January 2029 and extended support through January 2031.

However, organizations should evaluate their specific version, deployment and integration requirements rather than treating “supported” as equivalent to “no need to modernize.”

Sarakadiya can help you determine the appropriate path; whether that means upgrading an on-premises environment, preparing for cloud migration, modernizing customizations, migrating data or moving toward a modern Dynamics 365 and Dataverse architecture.
